Some teachers change your grade. Others change your life. This is a letter from me—a former student whose life could have gone in a very different direction if it weren’t for one teacher who saw me when I felt invisible. Today, as I watch teachers across the country face burnout, disrespect, and even violence, I feel compelled to speak up. Because I owe her my future. And it’s time someone stood up for hers.
The Day Everything Shifted
My name is Jordan. I was 15 years old, angry, and failing nearly every class. My parents were going through a messy divorce. I was skipping school, mouthing off to teachers, and constantly fighting with my peers. Most people at school avoided me. But not Ms. Avery.
Ms. Avery was my 9th grade English teacher. On the day I cursed at her and stormed out of class, I expected her to write me off like everyone else. But instead, she showed up at my lunch table the next day and said: “You don’t scare me. I just want to know what’s really going on with you.”
What She Gave Me That No One Else Did
She gave me space. She gave me time. But most of all, she gave me belief. Ms. Avery never let my worst behavior define me. She stayed after class to help me catch up. She let me re-write papers instead of failing. She checked in with me when my mom missed parent-teacher night. She even got me connected with the school counselor—something no one else had thought to do.
Because of her, I passed English that year. But I also stayed in school. I started caring again. I applied to community college. I graduated.
The Reality That Hurts
Last month, I saw on Facebook that Ms. Avery left teaching after an altercation with a student. Someone threw a stapler at her head. She didn’t return. The district gave her no paid leave. No public support. Just silence.
She gave everything to kids like me. And the system gave her nothing back.
Why I’m Writing This
Because it’s not fair. Because we always say teachers are heroes, but we don’t treat them that way. Because I’m living proof that one teacher can change everything—and it breaks my heart to know we’re losing teachers like her every day.
If You’re a Student Who Was Ever Helped by a Teacher:
- Reach out. Tell them.
- Post about them. Share their story.
- Support efforts that protect teachers from violence and burnout.
If You’re a Parent, Voter, or Citizen:
- Push for school policies that put teacher safety and wellness first.
- Vote for leaders who respect public education.
- Donate to campaigns that stand with teachers.
Conclusion
Ms. Avery, if you ever read this—thank you. You saw me when no one else did. You gave me back my future. I hope someone gives you back the peace and recognition you deserve.
And to every teacher reading this: we see you. We need you. We are with you.
